Over the years, I have noticed that the way we communicate differs per generation. There is a large gap between older and younger generations, especially when it comes to technology. This project was a study of cyber communication and how it effects the way we stay connected. The challenge was to gather evidence and then design a publication that would bring to light the issues of technology on older and younger people. I would need to show positive and negative experiences that either bring these generations together or push them farther apart. Towards the end of my 120 page publication, I aimed to offer solutions that would inspire younger generations to connect with the older ones to help each other find a way to utilize technology in a positive and uplifting way. It is difficult for older generations to continue to adapt to new technologies, but with the assistance of younger people they can quickly learn how to stay connected with their friends and families. It is equally difficult for younger generations to communicate in traditional ways, especially when their age group interacts in such a unique way. Cyber Communification was inspired by these challenges and attempts to unify the way we communicate. In order to encapsulate the idea of Cyber Communification, I made sure to tackle all angles of the project. The concept of unifying different generations by way of technological communication was a difficult task. The process was research intensive to ensure the accuracy of the message. The materials of the publication itself were equally important as the message it contained. I decided to use a fluorescent acrylic cover that represented the idea of cyber technology. The cover glowed green and was laser cut and engraved to allow for a spiral bind. The spiral binding was only applied to 2/3’s of the publication. It was chosen to represent the coil chords found on telephones and ethernet cables, both which are tools used to communicate. Other graphic elements included bitmapped images, a monospaced typeface and analog imagery. These elements were carefully chosen in order to emulate the nostalgic industrial design of the early 2000’s. Cyber Communification successfully explored problems and solutions to technological communication and the generation gap. The design itself communicates these ideas and is cohesive to its written message. This 120 page publication, took 3 months to complete and was worth every second. This project was successful in that it causes its readers to ask questions, seek answers and to react to its message.
