Project

As a children's book author and illustrator, my job is to both teach and entertain children. Many people today don't seem to know what a biome is, especially adults. So the cover needs to be eye catching enough to grab the consumers attention, despite potential low beginning interest levels in the subject matter. There are countless numbers of seek and find style books, so the illustrations need to be unique. And while making a book about such diverse landscapes, the illustrations also need to feel unified and cohesive.
In order to make an eye catching cover, I illustrated a full bleed rainforest scene. The illustration was built around the text. Many illustrated book covers take a shortcut and cut off the illustration to make room for the text, and the lack of effort shows. As adults gain interest in a modernly designed children's book, they are more likely to share it with their children, teaching everyone more about the Earth's diverse landscapes. These landscapes are such opposites, that I chose to flatten the illustrations in order to make the extremes feel more cohesive visually. Despite vast differences, each biome illustration shares textures and structure to unify the book.
