Project

The design of this publication focused around a single objective: to create an archive of emails that could be revisited over and over in the coming decades, while maintaining the power of the stories and experiences contained.
Despite the emails being written and stored digitally, the permanence of a physical publication has proven its staying power, and thus the project took the form of a book. However, despite this decision it felt important to maintain the digital nature of the messages both to echo the original readers experience, as well as to allow the book to become a marker in time through technology and form of communication.
To do so the book was organized chronologically and set using Diatype Programm and Italic. This choice offered a platform which remained visually quiet to amplify the lessons and stories in the writing. Nodding to the contents original form, the organizational structure of email was replicated at the beginning of each section with subject, timestamp, attachments, etc. included. Further, images and videos were presented and organized with digital standards such as file names and frame numbers while being placed on reversed color pages to reference the black screens on which they were originally displayed.
Finally, the book is contained within a cardboard box holding a personalized bookmark overprinted with a satellite image of the hospital where Wing practiced, as well as a flash drive containing the images and videos from his time in NYC.
Bringing this publication to fruition was a true honor. Wing’s writing stands as a strong first person testament to the human suffering caused by COVID-19 — a perspective made all the more essential during a pandemic marked by misinformation and lies.
