"How to Talk to Children About Temple Covenants After a Divorce" spread / Hales Creative
Project
Divorce is difficult to talk about, but especially to children, and especially when those children understand the eternal nature of families as taught to them in their church. This article explores ways parents can sensitively approach these subjects with children to help them understand these complex topics in sensitive ways. The design problem was to introduce themes of separation, estrangement, loneliness, sadness—and thoughtful communication—in a way that would entice curiosity and and comfort with reading on, going into a heavy but important article.
We worked with an illustrator who could delicately handle the subject matter in a conceptual way, balancing the depressing nature of it with the hopeful outcome as a result of thoughtful efforts of the parents. The tone of the imagery and typography needed to be subdued, clean, not too emotionally wrought one way or the other. The title treatment was intentionally simple, with a hint of metaphor, but intended to stay out of the way of the powerful details of the illustration.
