"Why and When It's Worth It to Work for Free" Editorial / Hailey Romero
Project
This project's objective was to take an online article and reimagine it in as a printed editorial. I saw a lot of potential in the article “Why and When It’s Worth It to Work for Free” from AIGA’s Eye on Design online publication.
The audience for the article I chose is geared toward designers like me, so it was important that the spreads were interesting and echoed the purpose of the article. I also wanted to take the project one step further by designing a cover that would fit in with Eye on Design's printed line of publications.
“Why and When It’s Worth It to Work for Free” discusses advice from Paula Scher on the importance of forgoing money for experience and creative control over a project. My design choices for the editorial reinforce the message of the text, considering I was using my own artistic freedom and doing the project for free.
For the style of the publication, I was very attracted to the heavy, condensed typography used in Twen, a German publication. So I used that as a guide for inspiration.
The imagery in my interpretation of "Why and When It’s Worth It to Work for Free" features symbols of freedom, power, and creativity, coupled with subtle humor. I also took elements from various forms of currency as patterns, image treatment, and typography.
The solution to this design problem created visually interesting spreads and informative design for an online article that are sure to appeal to the designers intended to read it.
